1. Why does ANSA work in South Africa and the U.S. instead of other countries in Africa?
ANSA was founded in 1989 by American artists and activists to support South Africa's quest to end apartheid and build a new democracy and to further social justice in the U.S.  ANSA's founders were not sure they would live to see apartheid fall but understood that once it did, there would be a need for international support to help rebuild the nation after centuries of racial oppression.  South Africa is now governed by a young democracy with the world's most progressive constitution, yet is also the country hardest hit by the AIDS pandemic with more people living with the virus and more children orphaned by the disease than anywhere else in the world.  ANSA remains dedicated to combating the problems in South Africa and America created or exacerbated by apartheid, segregation, and poverty, as well as to combating HIV/AIDS.

In 2000, the ANSA board met to determine the organization's future focus.  They weighed a number of options, including expanding efforts throughout Africa, as they recognized the vitally important needs of other African nations. Ultimately they made the difficult decision to continue to focus ANSA's programs and grantmaking predominantly on South Africa and secondarily in America, while undertaking advocacy efforts on AIDS on behalf of the African continent. ANSA is a small organization and the board felt this was the best way to use our limited resources to have the most strategic and significant impact.

2. Do I have to be an artist in order to get involved?
Everyone is welcome to be involved in ANSA. The organization is named Artists for a New South Africa because it was started by artists and entertainment industry professionals, including Alfre Woodard, Danny Glover, Blair Underwood, Mary Steenburgen, CCH Pounder, and Robert Guillaume.  Our members and supporters include all types of people from noted artists, experts, leaders, and philanthropists to grassroots activists, students, and volunteers.  ANSA harnesses the unique talents, resources, expertise, and influence of all our diverse supporters and partners to have strategic impact.

3. Is there a minimum amount that I have to donate?

4. Can I contact celebrities through ANSA?
If you have a request that pertains directly to ANSA and ANSA projects or is a way to raise funds for ANSA, you are welcome to contact the ANSA office with your question or request.  If you have a request for an artist that is unrelated to ANSA, please contact their professional representatives (agents, managers, publicists, etc.) directly.
