 Election Protection volunteers
Since 2002, ANSA has been a core member of Election Protection, a U.S. coalition of over 100 leading national, state, and local organizations working to safeguard voters' rights, especially in African American, Latino, and other historically disenfranchised communities. Election Protection is the most comprehensive U.S. national nonpartisan effort to prevent Election Day disenfranchisement.
ANSA produces nationally distributed Public Service Announcements and advertisements and arranges in-depth media interviews, press conferences, and events featuring noted artists, whom the community perceives as trustworthy and genuine. Those who have participated include Tichina Arnold, Angela Bassett, Tracy Chapman, Danny Glover, Robert Guillaume, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Rock, Blair Underwood, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Vanessa Williams, and Alfre Woodard.
People for the American Way Foundation founded and continues to lead Election Protection, which works to:
- Inform the public about upcoming elections
- Encourage voter participation
- Advise voters of their legal rights
- Offer free, immediate legal assistance through a toll-free number to those citizens encountering obstacles during the registration or voting process.
ANSA received the People for the American Way Foundation's 2005 Democracy Award for its pivotal role in Election Protection.
